Hi I own Nikon 300mm 2.8 af-I & I mainly used for lunar & super moon shooting; I agree it’s too old & parts is scared, but this is basically a matter of used, really very heavy & I used manfrotto & gimbal tripod combo attached to tc2x-iii & d500; I never had any complain for the 3years shooting all lunar eclipses I'm looking for a 300/2.8 type lens to shoot sports. I might also use it casually to take pictures of wildlife. The AF-I version is significantly cheaper than the newer AF-S versions, and seems to promise really good optical quality (and build quality) along with decent focusing speed.

Nikon's first primitive 300mm f/2.8 ED super tele was impractical because it had klunky, slow traditional unit focusing and a manual diaphragm. As you focused, the entire lens had to rack in and out, not exactly the thing for sports, which is the whole point of this lens.
